Sales & Marketing (UK) - Marketing Open Access


The role of the Marketing Executive, Open Access (OA) is to develop and implement effective, global marketing strategies for an assigned portfolio of products with support from a manager. Emphasis is on implementing marketing plans that drive revenue, submissions and usage for open access academic journals. The Marketing Executive utilizes a multi-channel marketing approach focusing on email and innovative digital marketing, in addition to other awareness and educational outreach activities.

Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities

The job functions include, but are not limited to, the following:


Marketing Planning and Analysis:

  • Create and implement specific marketing plans for assigned products, in collaboration with your manager
  • Maintain a quarterly campaign schedule
  • Ensure all campaigns are implemented on schedule
  • Work with Marcomm to analyze results of campaigns and adjust future campaigns accordingly


Email Marketing:

  • Collaborate with a dedicated Marcomm team to plan and implement an effective email marketing program for an assigned portfolio of products. This includes establishing frequency of email communication, identifying the target audience, and producing effective messaging.
  • Actively experiment with new email ideas and work with Marcomm to identify testing opportunities


Digital Marketing:

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date websites for assigned products, including compelling descriptions as well as marketing/promotional information
  • Propose and execute web marketing on SAGE-owned sites and for partner sites
  • Implement web advertising for assigned journals, considering both freely available options (SAGE owned and exchange opportunities) as well as paid advertising opportunities
  • Run effective pay per click (PPC) and social media advertising strategies, including Google AdWords, in consultation with other team members


Awareness and Educational Outreach:

  • Work with in-house design teams to create print and online collateral to meet specific marketing objectives at appropriate academic conferences
  • Work with Editorial to identify key conferences to target for submission driving activity, and to reach the target audience
  • Create and execute strategic marketing campaigns to increase awareness of Open Access amongst academics in target disciplines
  • Support overall SAGE Open Access branding initiatives and outreach to institutions


Operations and Editorial Collaboration:

  • Support the development of open access educational tools for internal use, including presentations and other marketing collateral
  • Implement launch/transition activity for assigned titles utilizing internal systems and processes


Additional requirements:

  • Ensure quality writing, editing, and proofing of all promotional copy
  • Travel to and represent company at conferences as requested
  • Act as representative of the company when dealing with potential or existing authors, editors and societies


Qualifications & Education

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • 1-3 years’ experience in marketing or publishing.
  • Experience planning and implementing email marketing strategies
  • Expertise with Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel and PowerPoint
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Superior planning and organizational skills
  • Must be a proactive, self-motivated individual who works well in a team
  • Budgeting and forecasting experience helpful
  • Experience with Google AdWords campaigns and/or social media advertising a plus
